Weekend Escape from Atlanta: St. Simons Island & the Golden Isles

Thinking about a family escape that doesn’t involve the hassle of air traveling? Today we are in luck to learn about a great weekend escape destination from Atlanta at St. Simons Island and the Golden Isles courtesy of our guest blogger, Lori Brown of Expedition Mom. Lori Brown is the Family Travel Editor for Expedition Mom, a family-travel website specializing in experiential “KNOW before you go” Adventure Guides and City itineraries.

Jekyll Island Great Dunes Park

Whatever your family style, it is sure to find a place in the coastal oasis of the Golden Isles. Families will revel in the fun and play of the beach community that is brimming with activity. Without built-up commercialism another layer of peace exists here that seems to only accentuate your choice of adventure.

St. Simons Island, along with the three other barrier islands comprising the Golden Isles, lies midway between Savannah, Ga, and Jacksonville, Fl. The contrast of its tumultuous historical past and present-day luxury, coupled with pristine, unspoiled beaches, marshes, and other habitats, lends to the unique charm of the area.

City: St. Simons and the Golden Isles

Distance: 315 miles

Nature Adventures

The kids will be off on a climbing and exploring quest as you navigate the oak tree graveyard at Driftwood Beach. Treasures abound. Go at low tide and take your camera.

Families from Atlanta will be amazed to see where some of the giant sea turtle residents of the Georgia Aquarium began their exhibit journey. The 4-H Tidelands Nature Center is home to many species that call the Georgia coast home, including smaller sea turtles. For a more in depth look at the care and rehabilitation of larger sea turtles, be sure to visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Current patients can be seen in their holding tanks; informational and interactive exhibits teach families some of the dangers sea turtles can encounter in the wild; and a viewing glass into the hospital may land you the privilege to see patient care in action.

If taking to sea is your desire, then coastal Georgia is the place to be. From the mainland town of Brunswick, just over the bridge, climb aboard with Cap Fendig’s Dolphin Tour. This 60-minute excursion is appropriate for even the younger members of the family. This inlet tour allows you views of the bird sanctuary and lighthouse. For a more ‘hands-on’ experience, jump aboard for a shrimpin’ excursion on Lady Jane to help a biologist catch and sort shrimp. A boiled feast onboard will truly be the freshest catch you have ever eaten.

Historical Adventures

With so much history in one place, where do you start? Hop aboard the St. Simons Island Trolley Tours for a spin around the island on a vintage trolley. Kids will love sitting on their knees looking out the windows (remember what that was like?). Your engaging, witty, and educational guide will dispense will local lore and knowledge as you cruise by places such as Bloody Marsh, Fort Frederica, and Retreat Plantation. A quick stop at Christ Church allows for some of the best photo opportunities, as well as a moment to stretch your legs.

After your tour, walk straight to the St Simons Lighthouse. Navigational history and haunted stairwells will greet you. Climb the 129 steps of the still operational lighthouse for a top-down view of Village Pier and St. Simons Sound.

On Jekyll, a smaller moving tour can be found on their ‘Passport to the century’ Tram Tour around the historic district. Once a playground of the wealthy, it’s membership once boated representation of one-sixth of the world’s wealth.

Just plain fun

Pier Village is the center of activity on St. Simons. From Pier Village you can walk or fish from the pier, let the kids have some playground fun at the water-front Neptune Park, look for dolphins, or grab an ice cream at St Simons Sweets.

Before leaving Pier Village, buy a kite at Frederica Station Gifts and head out for some high-flying fun on East Beach.

If you are across the bridge on Jekyll, you can do more than use your vehicle to explore the island. Bicycle rentals, including specialties such as surrey’s and tandem bikes allow for a more in-the-moment vantage. Want a less strenuous option, try renting an electric car or embarking on a guided Segway tour.

Places to stay on St. Simons Island and the Golden Isles:

Resort activities, restaurants, golf, expansive beach, pools, and more provide plenty of on-site fulfillment.

Where to eat on St. Simons Island and the Golden Isles:

Southern Soul BBQ

The family-friendly options for memorable food abounds in this quaint coastal area.

Visit 4th of May for exceptional southern cuisine, including the BEST pimento cheese, with coastal influence. They go out of their way to make your smallest family members feel welcome and happy.

Barbara Jeans is heralded for their crab cakes, and Sal’s Neighborhod Pizzeria serves up it’s highly-rated New York style pizza.

Southern Soul Barbeque provides a filling experience of barbeque cooked on a wood-fired smoker, plus amped up southern sides. Kids will be thrilled watching planes land at the neighboring airport while enjoying their meal on the covered, outside picnic-style seating.

Weekend Escape from Atlanta: Columbia, SC

Columbia, SC might not be as well known as other touristy town when it comes to weekend getaway from Atlanta. BUT I believe that it has much to offer with a great value that we shouldn’t overlook this college town. The town is filled with energy from college nearby (University of South Carolina, anyone?) and with great museums that provide a great fun for family with kids, it is definitely a great destination for a weekend getaway for family in Atlanta.

City: Columbia, SC

Distance: 212 miles

Est. Driving Time: 3 hours 49 mins

Things to Do in Columbia, SC:

Columbia has a lot of fun things to do with kids that a weekend might not be enough for you to truly enjoy what the city has to offer. Spring and Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities from hiking/biking along the Three Rivers Greenway to canoeing at Congaree National Park. All year round, kids will enjoy a visit to the South Largest Children’s Museum – EdVenture Children’s Museum and the South Carolina State Museum.

Here are things you can do with kids in Columbia.

  • Visit the World Largest Kid – Eddie at the EdVenture Children’s Museum. This museum has a great exhibit with hand-on, interactive to encourage kids to explore and learn. The outdoor is a great fun for a beautiful spring day.
  • Walk across the parking lot from the EdVenture to the South Carolina State Museum. Kids will love to explore the all-in-one museum where there is something for everyone from Science, History, Natural History and Art.
  • Get ready to explore the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. This 2-in-1 attraction is a great place for family with kids of all ages. The zoo is just the right size that you can explore without using all your energy. Save your energy for a walk in the Botanical Garden and your kids will love to walk on the Tree Top Bridge.
  • Enjoy an active day at Congaree National Park. Just right outside the city, the tallest national park is sit awaiting you to explore. For the non-outdoor person, the walkway is an easy way to enjoy nature without having to get outside your comfort zone.

Places to Stay in Columbia, SC:

There are many options available for the hotel stay in and around Columbia. We have stayed at the Embassy Suite Columbia – Greystone which is right across from the Riverbanks Zoo. The hotel is a great option for family with many amenities perfect for kids like free cook-to-order breakfast, indoor pool and suite room.

Check out Columbia Convention & Visitors Bureau for more information in planning a visit to Columbia.

Where to Eat in Columbia, SC:

Surprisingly, there are great varieties of food in Columbia from Tapas, American, Barbeque to Korean. I have yet to explore all options available in Columbia but some of the highly recommended places are the Motor Supply Company or Gervais & Vine. Unfortunately, those are less kid-friendly so we opted for a low-key eclectic mixed of Korean & Tex-Mex cafe called ‘Blue Cactus Cafe’.

For breakfast, the Original Pancake House is a local favorite and I can understand why. With the option like bacon waffle, it’s sure to be a hit for any kids in the family especially my kids!

So don’t wait. Pack up your bag and head out for a quick getaway that won’t break your bank. It’s still not too late to getaway for the Spring Break!

Spring Break from Atlanta: Great Wolf Lodge, Concord, NC

Today, I have our first guest post from Jessica Jones of Atlanta Mother’s Guide. She recently was invited to spent a weekend at the Great Wolf Lodge in Concord, NC. She will share with us Ten Reasons YOU (and your kids) will LOVE the Great Wolf Lodge

My husband and I live with our 3 kids (ages 6,4, and 2) in Atlanta, Georgia and are always looking for new and exciting things to do nearby! I write about our adventures on my blog but am excited to be here at Atlanta with Kids to share this AWESOME resort in our own backyard!

10. Distance:

The Great Wolf Lodge in Concord, NC is the PERFECT distance from Atlanta. With just a little over 4 hours, our drive to (and from) Concord was a breeze!

9. The Staff:

I cannot say enough great things about the staff. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. We did not encounter a single bad attitude the entire time we were there. They all went above and beyond to make our stay fun!

8. The Lifeguards:

The lifeguards at The Great Wolf Lodge are one of a kind! There are plenty of them and they are all doing their job. These lifeguards are constantly moving and NEVER sitting. They are probably the only employees there that don’t engage in conversation because they are too busy protecting your kids.

7. The Rooms:

There are no “rooms” at the Great Wolf Lodge only suites. We stayed in one of the basic family suites and it was hands down the largest hotel room I have ever stayed in! With kids ANY room can seem cramped but the kids had plenty of room to move. There were 2 queen sized beds AND a fold out couch so everyone slept comfortably! The room also had a fridge, microwave, and additional sink (outside of the bathroom) which made eating in the room a breeze.

6. Other Local Attractions:

Since the Great Wolf Lodge is located near Charlotte there are plenty of things to do in the area. Matter
of fact right down the road is Carowinds amusement park and the drag race track. Not to mention there are plenty of restaurants as well.

5. The Price:

Now when you first look at the price of a room at The Great Wolf Lodge you may think that it’s a little pricey…but the hotel price also includes the full access to Waterpark which you can start using as early as 1pm on the check-in day and as late as 9pm on the check-out day, kid-friendly activities like story time, the duck race and many more.

4. The Food:

Now I will be honest. We have 3 younger kids so we brought most of our own food. However the Great Wolf Lodge
does have 2 on-site restaurants. The kid-size buffet is a nice touch for this family-friendly attraction.

3. Kids Programs:

There are various programs available throughout the day from wolf walk, story time, face painting, crafts and magic show. For family travel with teen, there is also a teen area complete with video games, computers, and music. If that’s not enough, there are also special activities that cost extra fee like the jr. lifeguard program, Scoops kids spa, the arcade, and MagiQuest; a one-of-a-kind, live-action adventure game!

2. The Water Park:

The water park is the BEST! Kids are measured and given a colored wrist band so they know which rides they can and can’t ride when you enter. There is a great toddler pool complete with ride on jet skis, 3 slides, and of course a dumping water tower! The tree house is fun for everyone! The play pool is a little deeper (4 feet) and has a ropes course where the older kids can try to make it across the pool. Then there are the slides! My son is 6 and he could ride any of the slides either by himself or with his dad. Even my 4 yr old daughter rode most everything! Another thing I loved about the water park was the fact that there were plenty of chairs and tables.

1. Kid’s Rule:

In my opinion the BEST thing about the Great Wolf Lodge is that it is a family resort. EVERYONE there has kids so everyone understands when your kid has a meltdown. The entire resort is made with kids in mind and your kid’s safety is their first priority!

So who is ready to go?? Be sure to join their e-mail list so you can receive special offers!

5 Family Fun in Snow and Ski Near Atlanta

GatlingburgSnowtubing

For more update list check out our Top 10 Places to Snow & Ski in Atlanta: The Guide to Where to Snow Tubing, Skiing and Snowboarding near Atlanta.

This year has been extremely cold winter for my tropical blood. I feel like I have been cheated because you will think that with this kind of temperature we will get a chance for a white Christmas or playing snow angel in our backyard.

But don’t give up that hope yet. There are great ways you can have fun in snow around Atlanta area (some with a bit of a drive and some within a short distance).

Check out Top 5 Places to See Snow Near Atlanta

1. Snow Mountain – The most accessible and affordable option for the Metro Atlanta families. The Snow Mountain is part of the Stone Mountain Park. I have yet to visit but my friends told me that it’s a great option especially for family with small kids.

Place: Stone Mountain Park, U.S. Highway 78 East, Exit 8, Stone Mountain, GA 30087
Cost: From $25 for non-member.
Website: Snow Mountain Park

2. Scaly Mountain – This is the snow tubing only resort. It seems perfect for a family with no experience or who just want to enjoy snow without the expectation of skiing. With just over 2.5 hours drive from Atlanta, it’s a great option for a weekend getaway or even a day trip.

Place: Scaly Mountain, 7420 Dillard Road, Scaly Mountain, NC 28775
Cost: $22 for 2 hours session.
Website: Scaly Mountain

3. Sapphire Valley – With about 2 and a half hour drive, not much further than Scaly mountain we will be able to experience real skiing. This is a bigger resort with skiing and snow boarding. Plus the ticket price is not bad for a weekend that comes to under $30.

Place: Sapphire Valley Ski Area 4350 Hwy 64 West, Sapphire, NC 287
Cost: Check site for detail
Website: Sapphire Valley

4. Ober Gatlinburg – This will be more of a long weekend trip than a one day trip. Situated in Gatlinburg area allows us to explore not just skiing but other attractions in the area. Weekend Escape from Atlanta: Helen, GA

Fall is in the air and this makes me want to pack up and drive up to the mountain and stay in a cabin for a peaceful weekend getaway. Helen is a perfect quick weekend getaway from Atlanta. This small Bavarian town hidden up in the foothill of Blue Ridge mountain is small enough to explore in one weekend but has many things to do that you will be busy for the whole weekend.

Things to Do in Helen, GA:

It’s true that Helen is small. If you sneeze when you drive by the main street you might miss it. But I think it has more to offer for a family looking for a quick getaway that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Summer time is a great time to visit for several outdoor activities. Fall can be fun during the Oktoberfest but get ready to experience traffic jam in this little mountain town. Here are some of fun things to do with kids in Helen.

- River tubing is a fun activity for the whole family. The water is not as extreme so even little kids can enjoy the fun.
- Take a leisure stroll in the main street. It is very small but it has cute character.
- Ride the horse buggy around the block. The kids will enjoy the ride while listen to some fun fact from the driver.
- Hike up the Anna Ruby Fall for a fun outdoor adventure
- Visit Unicoi State Park for a fun day of activities like biking, hiking, paddle boating or just having a picnic by the lake.

Places to Stay in Helen, GA:

There are several hotels in town. But if you want to experience a truly weekend getaway, I would recommend looking for a cabin rental in the surrounding area. We found our rental unit online at Cedar Creek Cabins. The cabin is beautiful and very private. At night, we feel like we are in the middle of the forest. The location is about 10 minutes ride to Helen but with no traffic it’s just a quick ride along the scenic route.

Where to Eat in Helen, GA:

For a little taste of Bavarian, don’t miss Hofer’s Bakery and Cafe – a German bakery in the Alphine village of Helen. You can enjoy the authentic bakery while you wait for the cafe. Be prepare for a long wait during lunch time. But the food is worth the wait.

For a great atmosphere by the river, we enjoy our lunch at Cafe International. The staffs are friendly and attentive. The kids love the view outside with the river nearby. Not to miss is the dessert – Black Forest Cheesecake. But be warned that this dessert is not for children. You will taste the rum and I wouldn’t recommend you to eat and drive. :)
