Dragon Con Parade 2011 Guide for Families with Kids

Dragon Con Parade Atlanta 2011

Labor day weekend in Atlanta is quite busy with many fun family friendly events and festivals all around town. One of the biggest event in downtown Atlanta this weekend is the Annual Dragon Con convention. It’s the ultimate event for all things Sci-fi and Fantasy.

I have no shame in admitting that we are a big fan of Sci-fi and Fantasy. My husband grew up with Star Wars and Star Trek and now my son follows suite with his own love in Star Wars The Clone War. I, myself, love Harry Porter and Fantasy novels. So a chance to see all our characters come to life and march along the Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta is one that we won’t miss!

Dragon*Con Parade Route 2011

The Dragon*Con parade route will start from Woodruff Park on Peachtree Street NW and continue North on Peachtree Street NW to Baker Street NE and take a final turn onto Courtland Street to conclude at the Atlanta Mariott Maquis’ back entrance.

Family Tips For DragonCon Parade 2011:

  • Get there early to secure a spot where kids can have the view of all the parade.
  • There are many parking lots all around the area near the parade route. But if you live in town, MARTA might be better option. Kids will enjoy the train ride as well.
  • The parade participants are in costume and love to interact with the observers. Small kids might feel a bit overwhelmed so be ready for a squirm and scream.
  • After the parade, you can walk around and see more costumers in the area. There are plenty of food options. But you can also pack your lunch and picnic at the Centennial Olympic Park.
  • Enjoy!

Friday Five: Ideas to Stay Cool in Atlanta with Kids

Atlanta With Kids: Indoor Fun Bowling

We are not called ‘HOTlanta’ for nothing. The heat is excruciating during the day and even late into the night. So for parents who are looking for ways to beat the heat with their kids, we feel for you.

Here are our 5 Ideas to Stay Cool in Atlanta with Kids

1. Indoor Pool

Pool time is definitely a lifesaver during summer for all parents. But if you are not in the pool with them, sitting in the scourging Sun is not a way I picture myself spending time during summer. However, there are many indoor pools in the Atlanta metro area that you can check out.

2. Cheap Movie

An escape for a couple hours in a crisp cool air inside the dark theatre with family-friendly movie is another way to fight those high temperatures. Check out local movie theatres and see if they also offer family summer movie which normally shows kids-friendly movies that are out for a while. Typically tickets will run around $1 or even free.

3. Ice Skating Ring

You might feel weird packing light jacket when you leave your house in the 90 plus degree temperature. But your kids might not even want to put on those jackets when they get to the ice skating ring. It not only help you escape the heat but kids will get plenty of exercise without knowing it. It’s hard work pushing those feet on the slippery ring.

4. Bowling

Bowling is a great family entertainment option. It’s cheap and fun. Plus majority of bowling alleys are now more family-friendly than before. Smoking are prohibited in most places. Many also run great discount program for family during the days.

5. Indoor Inflatable Playground & Jumping Place

A couple years ago, the indoor inflatable playground and jumping places are all the rage. You can see them pop up in every corner. But now that the bubble is burst, only the ones with the most value survive. There is no doubt it’s a great entertainment option for family. With cheap entrance fee, parents can have their kids enjoy a few hours of fun indoor. But keep in mind that not all inflatable playgrounds are created equal. Some places have better options and some places have better environment. Check around to find out about your favorite places to take your kids during a hot day.

Summer Fun in Atlanta With Kids: FREE Mall of Georgia’s Movies Under the Stars Series

Summer Movies with Kids in Atlanta

Pinch me now. The end of school is within our grab and I’m not ready for the summer yet. Of course, I’m ready for the kids to be home but I don’t think I am prepared for them to be home ALL DAY LONG.

Thank goodness for many fun free & cheap things we can do around Atlanta metro with kids. Let’s start off the summer with free movies series.

The popular Mall of Georgia’s Movies Under the Stars Series is back!!

Mall of Georgia invites local families and friends to gather on the lawn at The Village Amphitheater to enjoy some sizzling summer entertainment!  Every Saturday beginning May 28, the mall will host Movies Under The Stars, a free night of movies and more, where shoppers can enjoy featured flicks – such as Despicable Me, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and more – under the stars on an impressive 42-foot screen.

To jump-start the night, local bands and artists will deliver live musical performances on stage at The Village Pavilion starting at 6:30 p.m.  Kids can enjoy a prize wheel, the Solid Rock bounce house and other special offers from Mall of Georgia’s Simon Kidgits Club.  Various tenants will be on hand sharing news about upcoming specials while food samplings and other goodies will be available for snacking, including tasty Kona Ice Gwinnett – the perfect cool-down treat on a warm summer evening!
